Russia expels two Colombian diplomats in response to a similar measure

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today, Wednesday, the expulsion of two Colombian diplomats, in response to Colombia’s expulsion of two Russian diplomats.

The ministry said, in a statement, that Colombian Ambassador Alfonso Lopez Caballero was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday and informed of the decision.

The statement added that the two Colombian diplomats were declared persona non grata on the basis of the “principle of reciprocity”.

Media reports said earlier this week that the Russian diplomats were expelled due to allegations of espionage.

The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the Colombian government’s decision is “baseless” and “inconsistent with the traditional spirit of friendly relations and mutual respect between Russia and Colombia”.
