Merkel: We have to do more for the United States of America

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday, that she believes that Germany and the European Union should get closer to the United States of America.

Merkel said today during the conference of the famous German newspaper “Süddeutsche Zeitung” that based on geopolitical and strategic reasons, the interest in a transatlantic partnership is important here (on the European side) at least as it is quite important there (on the American side).

The chancellor added that the European Union should contribute to this partnership, and explained that this also applies to the contribution to security cooperation in Europe and the contribution to NATO, as well as to cooperation in innovation, science and diplomatic endeavors around the world.

In response to a question about Joe Biden, who was recently elected to assume the presidency in the United States to succeed Donald Trump, Merkel confirmed that the federal government cooperates with every US president, and said: “I think it is no longer the same”.
