The United States and China exchange criticism at the Security Council over dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic

The United States and China exchanged unusually sharp criticism on Thursday, during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the emerging Coronavirus (Covid 19-).

“The United States is spreading the political virus and disinformation and creating confrontations and divisions,” said Chinese ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun.

Zhang added that Washington’s behavior, including “attacking other countries and United Nations bodies”, impeded global efforts to combat the pandemic.

He added that the failure of the United States to deal with the outbreak, which has nearly 7 million confirmed cases and more than 200,000 deaths, “is entirely its fault”.

He went on to say, “Enough… you have already caused enough trouble for the world… The United States must understand that blaming others will not solve its problems”.

Earlier, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, criticized other members of the Security Council for using the meeting, which was held on the Internet, to “focus on political grudges”.

Kraft said, “Shame on each of you, I am amazed and disgusted at the content of today’s discussion. In fact, I am very ashamed of this council”.

Kraft also echoed the speech of US President Donald Trump on Tuesday to the United Nations General Assembly, in which he blamed China for the global crisis of the deadly virus.

Kraft stated that Beijing’s decision to conceal the origin of the virus, reduce its danger, and prevent scientific cooperation “turning a local epidemic into a global pandemic” and “killing hundreds of thousands of lives”.
